Understanding and Overcoming Persistent SEO Challenges: A Case Study

Running an SEO campaign can sometimes present unforeseen obstacles, even with the most diligent efforts. Today, I want to share a case that underscores the complexities of website optimization and the importance of thorough analysis when progress stalls.

The Scenario

I manage multiple SEO clients, most of whom are experiencing steady growth in organic traffic and search engine rankings. However, one particular client has been facing a perplexing decline. Over the past several months, their organic traffic has dwindled dramatically—from hundreds of visitors weekly to just a handful. Despite ongoing efforts, the downward trend persists, leaving both the client and myself searching for answers.

Background and Efforts

This client’s website history is somewhat complicated. Initially, their previous agency advised replacing the original site, which housed valuable content and pages. Subsequent agencies followed suit, endorsing further redesigns that ultimately failed to generate leads or traffic improvements. When they engaged my services, we reinstated the original website as per their preference, given its strong content foundation.

Initially, organic traffic began to recover very slowly. However, in recent months, the decline has intensified, with traffic consistently decreasing over the last 3–4 months. Despite our comprehensive review, the cause of this decline remains elusive.

Diagnostics and Observations

Here’s what we’ve checked so far:

  • Indexing: The majority of key pages are properly indexed.
  • Google Search Console (GSC): No significant technical issues reported.
  • On-page SEO: Keyword targeting, meta tags, and content optimization are aligned with best practices.
  • Site Performance: Images are compressed; site speed is good; user experience on landing pages is optimal.
  • Content Quality: The content remains valuable and relevant.
  • Backlink Profile: Although backlink quality and quantity are areas we haven’t heavily focused on yet, I do not believe they are causing such a drastic decline.

Despite these efforts, traffic continues to drop, suggesting that the problem might be external or related to subtle issues not immediately apparent.

Next Steps and Considerations

Facing such challenges requires a strategic approach. We’re in the process of creating a new website on a fresh domain to restart from scratch, with the hope of circumventing potential domain-level issues. While this may be a necessary step, I remain committed to understanding the root cause of the problem rather than solely relying on a rebuild.

Seeking Advice

I appreciate any insights or experiences from others who’ve encountered similar situations. What factors could contribute to a significant, unexplained Google penalty or ranking drop despite diligent optimization? Could algorithmic updates or other external factors be at play?

Conclusion

Persistence and thorough analysis are vital when dealing with stubborn SEO issues. While the journey is challenging, I believe with careful troubleshooting, we can identify the underlying problem and turn things around. My priority is to support my client—they are excellent people whose business should not suffer due to unseen setbacks.

Thank you for your time and any guidance you can provide.
